    In recent years, along with the development of internationally economic cooperation, protection of intellectual property in foreign markets is becoming a more and more interested issue. However, the fact that some widely known, reputable marks, geographical indications which was advancely registered in a number of countries has rung an alarm for businesses who donot pay adequate attention nor have the necessary knowledge of protecting intellectual property overseas . a 4 Deputy Director of NOIP – Mr. Tran Huu Nam giving the opening speech at the workshop In order to provide necessary legal information and practical application of laws, and create a forum to exchange and share experiences between professionals, businesses, associations, Vietnam IP law firms on how to proceed with the registration and maintainance a Trademark the United States, in the framework of bilateral cooperation between the Vietnam National Intelleactual Property Department (NOIP) and the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Workshop on "Registrating and maintaining a Trademark in the USA" has taken places at JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi on 2 day 9&10, November, 2015. The workshop brought together over 70 representatives from trade associations, businesses, industrial property representatives as well as officials of trade promotion activities of relevant agencies and officials of the NOIP. Giving opening speech at the conference, Deputy Director of NOIP – Mr. Tran Huu Nam has emphasized the importance of the protection of intellectual property, especially trademarks in the export markets. With the fact that Vietnam is a signatory of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), then in the upcoming period, Vietnam will have many opportunities and fundamental advantages such as open-wide export markets, especially agricultural export markets; Vietnam will apporach more comprehensively into the two largest economies in the world, which are the United States and Japan. To take advantage of the favorable opportunities, it is required that the government, business community of Vietnam must make thorough preparation to integrate firmly into the TTP "playground", inwhich intellectual property is one of the issues that need urgently preparing. Mastering the US laws on trademark protection will help Vietnam businesses prepare necessary things before bringing goods into the market and avoid disputes or unreasonable damage caused by the unusability of its marks. He hoped that through the workshop the participants will understand the legal issues and practices of the United States laws on trademark protection so that exporting businesses can have the appropriate preparation before bringing goods into the foreign markets, and the relevant authorities can timely support for the exporting businesses. At the workshop, two experts from the USPTO Mrs. Cynthia Hendersen and Mrs. Laura Hammel introduced the procedures by which business can get the protection of their trademarks in the United States; the notes when preparing the application documents, following up the registration process; and useful electronic tools commonly used in the process of registration of trademarks at the USPTO; process of trademark registration application designating the United States through the Madrid system. Some prominent differences in the procedures for establishing the rights to the trademark system between the United States and Vietnam were also focused on in their presentations such as requests on the use of the mark, the provisions on the protection of non-traditional trademarks, geographical indications protected in the name of the trademark, etc.. The workshop also benefited from the shared experiences to support businesses in registering trademark in the United States of Lawyer Doan Hong Son coming from IP law firm Max. A significant time volume of the workshop was devoted to questions and answers discussion. Many problems were given to the speakers by delegates to learn thoroughly, carefully about protecting trademarks in the United States. Business Workshop was done carefully. The participants hope that in the future many similar workshops will be held by USPTO and NOIP so that enterprises in particular, and the public in general, can have more information as well as thorough preparation for the protection of Intellectual Property in the US market, thereby promoting cooperation, economic exchanges between the two countries.
